South Carolina burgers are known for their famous pimento cheese and BBQ flavors. What better way to give this classic cheese burger a Southern twist!
Juicy burgers are grilled for a few minutes, then topped with pimento cheese and served on a French hamburger roll with crispy lettuce, sliced onions, sliced tomatoes and a special sauce. YUMMY!
The pimiento cheese spread is a famous Palmetto cheese spread they make here in South Carolina. It has a spicy flavor to it, and it's mostly used as a dip and served with crackers. Pimento, sometimes spelled as pimiento cheese can be found at most supermarkets here in the low country. A container costs about $5.00 for a 12 ounces.
Burgers are so simple, they help me get dinner to the table in no time. Simply slice all the veggies in advance and transfer them to a serving platter. Spread 1 teaspoon of Thousand Island dressing onto the rolls, and set them aside.
The delicious sauce used with this cheese burger is simply Thousand Island dressing. Who knew, right? The melted pimento cheese spread combined with the Thousand Island dressing is what makes these cheeseburgers so sensational! Therefore, was no need to bring out the ketchup - for sure.
Grill burgers until they are fully cooked, then top each one with a dollop of pimento cheese. When the pimento cheese has melted, remove from grill and place each burger onto a bun. Then allow everyone to add their own toppings. It's so much fun.

Here's a burger tip: Take each package of ground round chop meat, open it and flip it onto a plate. Take a knife and cut the meat into 4 equal parts. Then take each one and shape into a patty. This will give you 4 equal measurements when making hamburger patties.
The Palmetto Cheese Burger
- 2 packages (about 3 pounds) ground beef, or turkey, or chicken
- 1 medium tomato - sliced into 8 slices
- 1 medium onion or red onion- sliced into 8 slices
- 1 bottle Thousand Island dressing
- 1 heart of Romaine lettuce, rinsed, separate 8 leaves
- 12 ounce Pimento cheese spread
- 8 Bakery French hamburger rolls -buns sliced open
Remove plastic wrapping from package of meat. Flip over the package onto a plate.
Each package yields 4 burger patties. Repeat with the second package.
Prepare the buns by spreading 1 teaspoon of Thousand Island dressing on each side on the buns. Set aside.
Place meat patties onto heated grill, and cook patties for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side, until burger are fully cooked. Remove and transfer to a platter. Immediately, top each patty with 1 or 2 tablespoons pimento cheese spread.
Assemble each burger in this order: bottom half of bun with meat patty, then tomato, onion, lettuce on top. Then top with half of bun. Serve.
